JAKARTA: A catastrophic train collision on the outskirts of Jakarta has resulted in at least 14 fatalities, with the death toll rising as rescue operations continue to uncover victims from the wreckage.

The accident, which occurred during the Tuesday morning commute, involved a passenger train and a heavy maintenance vehicle sharing the same track.

Emergency crews, including the national search and rescue agency, were quickly deployed to the site to extricate passengers from the crushed carriages. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as local residents joined forces with officials to pull survivors from the derailed coaches before medical teams could arrive.

According to the latest hospital records, dozens of passengers are receiving treatment for various injuries, ranging from fractures to severe lacerations. Medical officials have confirmed that many of these casualties remain in intensive care, placing a heavy strain on local healthcare facilities following the sharp increase in the confirmed death toll.

Preliminary reports from the Indonesian transport ministry suggest that the collision may have been caused by a failure in the automated signaling system. Investigators are currently analysing data recorders and interviewing dispatchers to understand why both vehicles were cleared to operate on the same stretch of rail.

The crash has caused a complete suspension of services on one of the country’s busiest transit corridors. Authorities have advised the public to seek alternative transportation while heavy machinery is used to clear the wreckage and repair the damaged infrastructure.

This incident has reignited public debate regarding the safety standards and ageing infrastructure of Indonesia’s rail network. While the government has pledged a thorough investigation, the immediate focus remains on supporting the victims and their families during this unfolding tragedy.
