ABU DHABI: The UAE’s Federal Prosecution for Rumours and Cybercrimes has taken decisive action against a network of over 100 social media accounts, blocking them for inciting violence and spreading divisive content. This significant move underscores the nation's zero-tolerance policy towards digital activities that threaten social cohesion or public safety.

The crackdown targeted accounts active across several Gulf nations that were found to be disseminating ‘incitement to violence’ and ‘hate speech.’ Authorities noted that these digital platforms were being used to stir sectarianism and civil unrest, violating the stringent cyber laws designed to protect the Kingdom’s social fabric.

According to UAE officials, the investigation revealed that many of these accounts were part of coordinated efforts to manipulate public opinion. By using inflammatory rhetoric, the operators sought to provoke hostile actions and destabilise the peaceful environment traditionally maintained within the region.

The legal framework cited for this action includes the UAE’s Federal Decree-Law on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes. This legislation empowers the Public Prosecution to block any electronic site or account that promotes illegal ideologies or poses a risk to national security and order.

In addition to the blocks, the authorities issued a stern warning to the public regarding the legal consequences of engaging with or sharing such harmful content. Under the law, individuals who assist in the spread of incitement can face severe penalties, including hefty fines and lengthy prison sentences.

This latest intervention highlights the government's ongoing commitment to monitoring the digital landscape. By proactively removing extremist content and holding influencers accountable, the UAE aims to ensure that social media remains a space for constructive dialogue rather than a tool for regional disruption.
