Tim Cook to Step Up as Apple's Executive Chairman
Apple has announced a significant leadership transition, confirming that Tim Cook will move from his role as Chief Executive Officer to become Executive Chairman of the company’s board, while John Ternus will take over as the next CEO, effective September 1, 2026.
The transition follows a long-term succession planning process that was unanimously approved by Apple’s Board of Directors. Cook will continue serving as CEO through the summer, working closely with Ternus to ensure a smooth handover of leadership responsibilities.
In his new role as Executive Chairman, Cook will remain involved in guiding Apple at the board level and will also engage in global policy and strategic matters. He described leading Apple as the “greatest privilege” of his life and expressed confidence in Ternus as his successor.
Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, said he is honored to take on the role and emphasized his commitment to continuing Apple’s innovation-driven mission. He has been with Apple for over two decades and has played a key role in developing major product lines, including iPhone, Mac, iPad, and AirPods.
Apple board member Arthur Levinson praised Cook’s leadership, highlighting his contribution to transforming Apple into one of the world’s most valuable companies. Levinson will transition to Lead Independent Director as part of the restructuring.
Under Cook’s leadership since 2011, Apple has expanded its product ecosystem, grown its services business significantly, and increased its global footprint, while also focusing on sustainability, privacy, and accessibility.
The upcoming leadership change marks one of the most important transitions in Apple’s recent history, positioning Ternus to lead the company into its next phase of innovation.
