Washington DC : US Vice President JD Vance will lead an American delegation for talks with Iran in Pakistan beginning April 11, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

Leavitt said the recent ceasefire between the United States and Iran has created an “opening” that could develop into longer-term peace in the region, though she acknowledged that key details of the negotiations remain unclear.

She said special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will also join the delegation, with discussions expected to focus on proposals aimed at stabilising tensions, including the disputed Strait of Hormuz.

Leavitt claimed that while Iran has issued public warnings to shipping vessels in the region, its private messaging is different, and insisted that the Strait will be reopened under the ceasefire framework.

She also described the US position as a “victory,” saying that key military objectives of Operation Epic Fury had been achieved, including the weakening of Iran’s military capabilities.

However, Iran has reportedly warned that ships entering the Strait without permission could be targeted, raising uncertainty over maritime security despite ceasefire claims.

Leavitt dismissed reports of detailed Iranian proposals as inaccurate, saying earlier suggestions were rejected and replaced with revised offers after pressure from Washington.

She also said President Donald Trump maintains a firm negotiating stance and will ensure Iran is held accountable while pushing for a swift reopening of the Strait.

The announcement comes amid rising global concern over the humanitarian and economic impact of the conflict, as well as growing political debate in Washington over the direction of US foreign policy.
