Europe Urged to Begin Gas Storage Refill Immediately Ahead of Winter
Europe must urgently begin refilling its gas reserves to prepare for the upcoming winter, the continent’s gas transmission network operator warned on Thursday.
The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas said it is “critical” to start injecting gas into storage facilities as early as possible, highlighting growing concerns over supply pressures and lower reserve levels.
ENTSOG Director General Piotr Kus noted that Europe is entering the summer refill season with significantly reduced gas storage compared to previous years. He added that global energy markets remain under strain, increasing the urgency of early action.
“Starting injections as early as April and continuing through November is essential to ensure sufficient reserves for the winter,” Kus said.
The warning comes as Europe faces ongoing uncertainty in energy supply, prompting authorities to prioritize storage buildup to avoid shortages during colder months.
