RIYADH: Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan received a phone call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Thursday, marking the first official contact between the two nations since the start of the recent war.

According to a statement from the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers reviewed the latest regional developments and discussed strategies to reduce tensions. The primary focus of the conversation was to restore security and stability to the region following a period of significant hostility.

This diplomatic engagement follows a fragile ceasefire announced on Tuesday. The conflict had previously seen direct military actions, including Iranian strikes against Gulf countries, which Tehran claimed were in retaliation for Israeli-American attacks.

The call is seen by regional observers as a critical step in utilizing the current truce to open communication channels. Both ministries expressed a mutual interest in de-escalating the situation to prevent further spillover of the conflict, which has impacted maritime security and regional infrastructure over the past several weeks.
