Manila: The Philippines has declared a state of national energy emergency as concerns grow over fuel shortages linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the emergency measure, warning of an “imminent danger” to the country’s energy supply and stability.
According to Foreign Affairs Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro, the country has only 40 to 45 days’ worth of petroleum reserves remaining. Speaking to Christiane Amanpour on CNN, Lazaro highlighted the “cascading effects” of rising global energy prices on the Philippine economy.
In response, the government has rolled out a series of emergency measures, including enforcing energy conservation, providing fuel subsidies, and implementing steps to lower transportation costs. Authorities have also pledged strict action against hoarding, profiteering, and manipulation of petroleum supply.
The Philippines is the first country to officially declare an energy emergency amid the escalating crisis, underscoring the widening global impact of instability in the Middle East.
