London: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said there is “no assessment” that the UK is being directly targeted by Iranian missiles, amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
His remarks come after the Israel Defense Forces claimed that Iran possesses missiles capable of reaching major European cities, including London, Paris and Berlin though no evidence was provided.
The statement followed reports of an attempted Iranian strike on the joint UK-US military base at Diego Garcia, located roughly 3,800 km from Iran. The base is strategically significant and can host long-range US bombers.
Speaking to media, Starmer emphasised that UK security assessments are ongoing, but there is currently no indication the country itself is being targeted. He stressed the importance of protecting British lives and interests while avoiding deeper involvement in the conflict.
The UK has, however, authorised the use of its military bases to support strikes on Iranian missile launchers targeting commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz marking a shift from its earlier focus on defending allied interests in the Gulf.
Starmer reiterated the need for de-escalation, calling for coordinated international efforts to reduce tensions in the region.
