Tehran: Thousands of mourners gathered on Sunday in central Tehran following the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, according to journalists from Agence France-Presse.

Crowds dressed largely in black filled Enghelab Square, many chanting slogans of “death to America” and “death to Israel”, while waving Iranian flags and holding portraits of the late leader.

Several mourners were seen in tears as the gathering turned into a show of public grief and defiance, coming amid heightened regional tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The rally marked one of the first large public mourning events in the capital since Khamenei’s death was announced.
