Smoke and explosions reported near Erbil airport hosting US-led forces

Erbil: Loud explosions were heard early Sunday near Erbil, as thick black smoke rose from the area around Erbil International Airport, which hosts troops from the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan Region.
According to AFP, the blasts were heard close to the airport complex, a key military and logistics hub for coalition forces in northern Iraq.
The incident followed a wave of aerial threats on Saturday, when U.S.-led coalition forces intercepted and shot down several missiles and explosive-laden drones over Erbil, security sources said.
