Manama: The latest edition of the Henley & Partners Passport Index has brought mixed developments for Pakistan and India, highlighting shifting trends in global mobility.

Pakistan now ranks 98th on the Henley Passport Index 2026, improving from 100th place last year. Pakistani passport holders can now access 31 countries without obtaining a visa in advance, through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival (VOA), or electronic travel authorisation (eTA).

The country shares its position with Yemen, with expanded access across Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Analysts attribute the improvement to gradual diplomatic engagement and bilateral agreements.

Among Asian destinations offering easier access are Nepal, Cambodia, the Maldives, Timor-Leste and Qatar (VOA), while Sri Lanka provides entry through an eTA system. In Africa, Rwanda grants visa-free entry, with Kenya and Seychelles offering electronic permits. Caribbean nations including Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, and Trinidad and Tobago also allow visa-free travel. Pacific destinations such as the Cook Islands, Samoa, and Vanuatu are included as well.

Meanwhile, India has climbed to 75th position in 2026, up from 85th in 2025 and 80th in January this year. However, despite the improved ranking, Indian passport holders currently have access to 56 destinations without prior visas — slightly lower than the 57 destinations recorded in 2025.

Globally, Singapore retains the top position with visa-free access to 192 destinations. The United Arab Emirates ranks fifth, while India remains in the lower-middle tier despite its recent climb.

Travel experts say while Pakistan’s incremental progress and India’s ranking jump reflect positive diplomatic signals, sustained policy efforts will be key to securing broader mobility in the future.
