Trump Fires Back at Carney Over Davos Speech

Davos: In a striking response to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s address at the World Economic Forum, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly criticised Canada on Wednesday, asserting that the country owes its prosperity and security to the United States. Trump’s remarks came during a broader speech at the annual gathering of global leaders, where he also discussed Arctic strategy and other foreign policy issues.
Carney had taken the podium a day earlier to warn that the established post-war, rules-based international order is weakening amid intensifying great-power rivalry. His remarks which received a standing ovation called on “middle powers” to adapt to a shifting geopolitical landscape and reduce reliance on any single dominant ally. Although Carney did not mention Trump by name, his speech was widely seen as a critique of current U.S. foreign and economic tactics.
Reacting on Wednesday, Trump pivoted sharply, telling the assembled Davos audience that Canada should appreciate the U.S. role in underpinning its security. “Canada lives because of the United States,” he said, adding that Ottawa “gets a lot of freebies from us” and suggesting Carney’s earlier comments failed to recognise that contribution. He urged the Canadian leader to “remember that” in future remarks.
Trump’s rebuke of Carney followed a broader, sometimes meandering address that touched on issues such as U.S. ambitions regarding Greenland, North American defence, and economic policy. While critics have called the tone confrontational, Trump’s comments underscore ongoing strains in relations between the U.S. and its traditional allies amid debates over trade, security cooperation, and the evolving global order.
Canadian officials have not formally responded to Trump’s latest comments, though Carney’s speech at the forum triggered extensive international discussion about alliance dynamics and multilateral cooperation. Observers say the exchange highlights deeper differences over how Canada and the United States view their roles and interdependence on the global stage.
