New Delhi: India’s passport has climbed five places to rank 80th in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, reflecting a modest improvement in global mobility and diplomatic outreach.
Although the total number of visa-free destinations available to Indian passport holders has slightly decreased to 55, India secured new visa-free access to Malaysia and Kazakhstan, strengthening travel and business links with Southeast and Central Asia.
The additions are seen as the result of sustained diplomatic engagement and negotiations on digital visa frameworks. Malaysia, a key tourism hub, is partnering with India as part of its “Visit Malaysia Year 2026” campaign, aimed at boosting travel and commercial exchanges. Kazakhstan, meanwhile, plays a central role in India’s expanding strategic footprint in Central Asia, facilitating easier short-term professional and leisure travel.
The new access broadens travel options beyond traditional destinations such as Dubai and Singapore, offering Indian travellers greater flexibility for tourism and business trips.
Under the updated arrangements, Indian citizens can stay visa-free in Malaysia for up to 30 days and in Kazakhstan for up to 14 days. Authorities have advised travellers to carry valid travel documents and complete any required digital entry forms, noting that visa-free entry is limited to tourism purposes and remains subject to approval by immigration officials.
