California: A mysterious video appearing to run for more than 140 years has baffled millions of YouTube users and sparked widespread online discussion, though closer inspection suggests the unusual duration is likely due to a technical anomaly rather than a true upload.
The video, uploaded on January 5 by an account using the handle @ShinyWR, shows a runtime of 1,234,567 hours and 30 minutes roughly 141 years according to its thumbnail and listing page. Despite the astonishing figure, clicking to play reveals a video of about 12 hours of blank footage with no sound or visuals.
The channel has only a small number of uploads, including other unusually long-listed videos, and the blank video has drawn millions of views and tens of thousands of comments, with many users baffled and speculating about the upload’s purpose.
Technical observers and digital sleuths point to a metadata or interface glitch that allows the displayed duration to exceed YouTube’s actual supported limits, causing the platform’s UI to show a false length. When played, the progress bar and actual runtime align with a much shorter video, exposing the discrepancy.
The upload has led to a wave of theories about its origin and meaning, with some online commenters intrigued or confused by the cryptic nature of the video and its simple title a single question mark and a description that reportedly contains enigmatic text.
YouTube has not issued an official response regarding the specific upload or any potential policy breach, and the video remains accessible on the platform, serving as a curious digital anomaly and a reminder of how even well-established platforms can exhibit unexpected behaviours.
