Hezbollah aligns with Iran Amid Regional Tensions

Beirut: Lebanon’s Hezbollah has reiterated strong public support for the Iranian government and leadership, backing Tehran’s political system and condemning foreign interference in Iran’s internal affairs, according to statements released by the group.

In a communique released this week, Hezbollah affirmed its “full support for the Iranian people and their leadership,” and criticised what it described as external interference, particularly from the United States, in Iran’s domestic situation. The statement highlighted Hezbollah’s alignment with Iran’s government amid ongoing regional challenges.

Separately, Hezbollah’s Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem marked the anniversary of the martyrdom of key figures tied to Iran and the broader “resistance” axis, a reference to Iran-aligned groups in the Middle East, reinforcing the ideological and strategic bond between the Lebanese group and Tehran.

The renewed displays of support come at a sensitive moment for Lebanon’s internal politics. Beirut recently rebuffed some overtures from Tehran after Iranian comments linked Hezbollah closely to Iran’s regional strategy, reflecting domestic unease at perceived foreign influence.

Hezbollah’s historical ties to Iran stretch back decades: Tehran has long been a key backer of the group, providing political, financial, and military support. Israeli and U.S. officials, as well as some Lebanese political figures, have repeatedly criticised Tehran’s influence in Lebanon, framing Iran’s support for Hezbollah as a factor complicating Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability.
