Investigators have authenticated footage of a funeral protest held at the Behesht-Zahra Mortuary, located 20km south of Tehran. By matching the architectural features of the building’s atrium with images from Google Photos and conducting reverse image searches, it has been confirmed by the BBC that the event took place on Sunday. The footage shows mourners carrying a casket and crying for “bravery,” marking a significant departure from traditional mourning rites.
Typically, such ceremonies feature the religious declaration “There is no God but Allah,” but this specific gathering was characterized by political defiance. The crowd was heard chanting “death to Khamenei,” a direct protest against Iran’s Supreme Leader. Although much of the video was blurred to protect the identities of those present, this incident underscores how funeral processions are increasingly becoming focal points for public dissent amid the ongoing unrest in the country.
