Sydney: The man hailed as the "Bondi Hero," Ahmed al-Ahmed, has been presented with a cheque for A$2.5 million while recovering from gunshot wounds at Sydney’s St George Hospital. The 43-year-old fruit shop owner, originally from Syria, gained international fame after footage showed him charging at a gunman during the December 14 massacre at Bondi Beach. The attack, which targeted a Hanukkah celebration, left 15 people dead and 40 injured. Ahmed’s intervention, tackling one of the two assailants and seizing his rifle, is credited with saving countless lives.

The massive donation was delivered by social media influencer Zachery Dereniowski (known online as MDMotivator), representing contributions from over 43,000 people worldwide. Among the donors was billionaire Bill Ackman, who contributed A$99,999. In an emotional video shared on TikTok, a humble Ahmed asked, "I deserve it?" to which Dereniowski replied, "Every penny."
