Tokyo: A devastating incident unfolded at a private sauna room in Tokyo’s Akasaka district, claiming the lives of a married couple. Masanari Matsuda, 36, a beauty salon owner and Yoko Matsuda, 37, a nail artist, were found unresponsive in a charred private sauna room, with authorities suspecting they were trapped due to a faulty doorknob and a disabled emergency alarm.

The fire, likely sparked by a towel touching hot stones, was reported at 12:25 p.m. local time. Firefighters discovered the doorknob detached, preventing escape. The sauna’s emergency button, meant to alert staff, had been switched off for two years, despite signs the couple pressed it. Staff confirmed the system was non-operational since 2023. The facility, operational since July 2022, passed its April 2023 safety inspection with no major issues.

Police are investigating the facility for professional negligence resulting in death. The sauna has closed temporarily, offering refunds. Autopsy results are pending.
