Qatari Diplomats Killed While Heading to Gaza Ceasefire Summit

Three Qatari diplomats lost their lives in a tragic car accident on Saturday while traveling to Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, health officials confirmed.

According to officials, the diplomats’ vehicle overturned roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Sharm el-Sheikh. Two other diplomats sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The victims were members of Qatar’s protocol team, traveling to the city ahead of a high-level international summit celebrating the recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the delegation was part of the preparations for Qatar’s representation at the event.

Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, played a key role in mediating the ceasefire that brought an end to weeks of conflict in Gaza. Turkey also joined the negotiations, which concluded in Sharm el-Sheikh earlier this month, leading to an agreement that included the release of hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

The upcoming summit in Sharm el-Sheikh will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a statement from Egypt’s presidency. The event is expected to draw participation from more than two dozen world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
