Australia Officially Recognises the State of Palestine

The Commonwealth of Australia has formally recognised the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, the government announced today.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that Australia’s recognition acknowledges the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own. This decision comes as part of a coordinated international effort alongside Canada and the United Kingdom to revive momentum towards a two-state solution, beginning with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 atrocities.

“Today’s recognition reflects Australia’s longstanding commitment to a two-state solution, the only path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians,” the joint statement said.

The statement highlighted that the international community has outlined clear expectations for the Palestinian Authority. The President of the Palestinian Authority has reaffirmed recognition of Israel’s right to exist and provided direct assurances to Australia, including commitments to hold democratic elections and implement reforms in finance, governance, and education. The statement stressed that the terrorist organisation Hamas must play no role in Palestine.

Australia also noted that further steps, including the establishment of diplomatic relations and the opening of embassies, will be considered as the Palestinian Authority progresses on its reform commitments.

International efforts are already underway to create a credible peace plan that would support Gaza’s reconstruction, strengthen the capacity of the Palestinian state, and guarantee Israel’s security. The leadership of the Arab League and the United States is seen as crucial in achieving these goals.

Australia affirmed that it will continue working with international partners to build on today’s recognition and advance towards lasting peace and security in the Middle East, a goal described as the hope and right of all humanity.
