A wave of drone strikes hit key infrastructure and military targets near Sudan’s army-controlled capital on Tuesday, witnesses and officials told AFP, ending a recent period of relative calm in the region.

The attacks struck a power station, a weapons factory, and an oil refinery near Khartoum, witnesses at the sites said, while a military source confirmed that an air base was also targeted. The strikes occurred around 5:00 a.m. local time (3:00 a.m. GMT).

Witnesses reported that drones hit the Al-Jaili oil refinery, the Al-Markhiyat substation in Omdurman, and the Yarmuk weapons factory. Four drones reportedly targeted the power station, causing a fire, though the national electricity company said the damage was minor. Images shared on social media appeared to show flames at the site.

A military source said the strike on Wadi Seidna air base was intercepted by air defenses. “Our air defense intercepted and shot down the drones that were targeting the base,” the source told AFP.

Another drone strike reportedly hit an army building in Kafuri, injuring several troops.

The attacks come months after Sudan’s army ousted the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) from the area in May. Since then, the army-backed government has been pushing a major reconstruction effort in Khartoum, following mass displacement caused by earlier fighting.

In recent months, the RSF has been accused of carrying out multiple drone attacks in army-controlled areas, targeting critical infrastructure and triggering power outages affecting millions.
