Two suspected rebels and two Indian soldiers were killed during a two-day gunfight in Indian-administered Kashmir, officials reported Tuesday.

The confrontation began Monday in the forests of southern Kulgam after Indian forces received a tip-off about armed militants in the area. The ensuing search led to a “fierce exchange of gunfire” that lasted for two days, the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps said on social media.

The army expressed its condolences, stating: “The Indian Army expresses deepest condolences and stands in solidarity with the bereaved families” of the soldiers who lost their lives. Authorities are still investigating the identities of the militants.

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority region, has been divided between India and Pakistan since 1947, with both countries claiming it in full. Rebel groups have carried out an insurgency against Indian rule since 1989, seeking either independence for Kashmir or its merger with Pakistan. The long-running conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, most of them civilians.
