Israel’s Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, on Sunday called the recent international efforts to recognise a Palestinian state a “mistake” and warned they could prompt an unspecified unilateral response from Israel.
The comments came amid reports that Israel plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank. Several countries, including France and the United Kingdom, have pledged to recognise Palestinian statehood during the 80th UN General Assembly this month.
Relations between Israel and France have been particularly tense since French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s plans and co-hosted a UN conference on the two-state solution with Saudi Arabia in July. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer last month said the UK could recognise a Palestinian state if Israel failed to agree to a truce in the ongoing Gaza conflict, sparked by Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023.
