European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has warned that the global economy could face serious risks if US President Donald Trump gains control over US monetary policy.
Trump has reportedly sought to remove Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, a move critics say could allow him to appoint officials more likely to support his push for lower interest rates.
Speaking to France's Radio Classique, Lagarde said it would be “very difficult” for Trump to completely control the Federal Reserve’s decision-making. However, she added that if he were successful, it would pose a “very serious danger” to both the US and the world economy.
Lagarde highlighted that the Federal Reserve plays a crucial role in maintaining price stability and supporting employment. “If monetary policy depended on the directives of a single person, the balance of the US economy—and its ripple effects across the world—would be very worrying,” she said.
