South Korea has just recorded its hottest summer on record, official data revealed on Monday, surpassing last year’s temperatures.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the average temperature from June 1 to August 31 was 25.7°C, the highest since record-keeping began in 1973. The previous record for this period was 25.6°C.

Both South and North Korea also saw their warmest June on record, with temperatures about 2°C higher than usual. During the summer, the country experienced 28.1 heatwave days—days when temperatures reached 33°C or higher—the third-highest number since 1973.

The extreme heat comes as parts of the country face a severe drought, particularly in the eastern coastal city of Gangneung. Authorities have declared a state of national disaster after weeks without rain, with water levels at the city’s main reservoir dropping below 15 percent.

To cope with the shortage, officials have introduced strict water restrictions, including shutting off 75 percent of household water meters.

Residents are being urged to conserve water as the country continues to battle both soaring temperatures and dwindling water supplies.
