A tragic alcohol poisoning incident in Kuwait has turned into a source of hope after several victims helped save lives through organ donation, doctors confirmed.

The poisoning, caused by tainted drinks, affected 160 people and claimed 23 lives, mostly among Asian nationals. According to the Health Ministry, at least 51 patients required urgent kidney dialysis, while 31 were placed on mechanical ventilation. Authorities have arrested 67 suspects linked to the illegal production and distribution of the alcohol.

In an interview with state television KTV, Dr. Mustafa Al-Mousawi, Chairman of Kuwait’s Organ Transplant Center, revealed that around 20 patients were admitted to intensive care following the incident. “Some were declared brain dead, others suffered cardiac arrest. Of the 12 diagnosed with brain death, we contacted families and obtained 10 approvals,” he explained.

From those approvals, doctors successfully retrieved 20 kidneys, three hearts, four livers, and two lungs, giving critically ill patients across Kuwait a renewed chance at life.

The incident highlights not only the dangers of illicit alcohol consumption but also the life-saving impact of organ donation amidst tragedy.
