Rescue teams race to help stranded families as rivers overflow

Rescue teams in boats rushed to reach families stranded by severe flooding in Pakistan’s populous eastern Punjab province on Thursday. The disaster came after three major rivers overflowed, caused by heavy rainfall and the release of water from overflowing dams in neighboring India.

Officials said nearly 250,000 people were forced to leave their homes, while over 1 million people were affected by the floods. Crops and businesses have been destroyed, and many residents remain unable to evacuate.

Police reported that at least 15 people were killed the previous day in Gujranwala district and surrounding villages. Forecasters warned that more rain is expected on Friday after a brief two-day pause, with heavy rainfall potentially continuing into next week.
