Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday issued a formal apology to more than 4,500 Greenlandic people affected by a forced contraception program that ran in Greenland until 1992. The campaign, carried out by Danish authorities, aimed to reduce the birth rate among the Inuit population.
In a heartfelt statement, Frederiksen said, “We cannot change what has happened. But we can take responsibility. Therefore, on behalf of Denmark, I would like to say: I am sorry.”
The apology comes after decades of criticism and calls for recognition of the harm caused by the program, which has left lasting physical and emotional impacts on its victims.
