Qatar announced on Tuesday that Hamas has given a positive response to a Gaza ceasefire proposal that is “almost identical” to an earlier version previously accepted by Israel.
Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, told reporters that while Hamas approved the proposal, he did not provide details on any minor changes made to the agreement.
Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, has been mediating efforts to end the 22-month conflict in Gaza. So far, these talks have only led to two short-lived truces, with long-term peace remaining elusive.
Hopes for a new deal surged on Monday after Hamas signaled its acceptance of the ceasefire proposal, following diplomatic efforts in Cairo. A previous attempt in July had fallen apart after Israel accepted the proposal but rejected amendments suggested by Hamas.
Ansari cautioned that while the development is positive, it does not yet signal a final breakthrough. “We are at a decisive humanitarian moment. If we don’t reach a deal now, we will face a humanitarian catastrophe worse than anything seen before,” he said.
Recent negotiations have focused on a 60-day initial truce and the gradual release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza—a plan first proposed by U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. Ansari confirmed that the current proposal includes both the two-month truce and measures to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
