Five Lebanese soldiers lost their lives on Saturday when an explosion occurred inside a Hezbollah military facility in southern Lebanon, according to a military source.
The blast happened as the soldiers were working to clear munitions and unexploded ordnance left behind from the recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the troops were part of an engineering unit tasked with safely removing and disabling the dangerous remnants of war.
While the Lebanese army has not yet released an official statement, President Joseph Aoun expressed his sorrow over what he described as a “painful incident.” He said he had spoken with army commander Rodolphe Haykal about the tragedy, which also left other soldiers wounded.
Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations continue into the deadly explosion.
