United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over Israel’s decision to “take control of Gaza City,” warning it could lead to an even greater humanitarian disaster for Palestinians.
In a statement, Guterres said the move represents a dangerous escalation that risks worsening the suffering of millions in Gaza and could further endanger lives — including those of the remaining hostages.
“The people of Gaza are already enduring a humanitarian catastrophe of horrific proportions,” he said, warning that more fighting will bring further displacement, loss of life, and massive destruction.
The UN chief renewed his call for a permanent ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian aid access across Gaza, and the immediate, unconditional release of all hostages.
He also urged Israel to honor its obligations under international law, recalling a July 2024 International Court of Justice ruling that called on Israel to halt all new settlement activity, evacuate settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and end its occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
Guterres stressed that lasting peace can only be achieved by ending the occupation and realizing a viable two-state solution, with Gaza as an inseparable part of a future Palestinian state.
