Skywatchers are set for a breathtaking celestial event on Saturday, August 2, 2027, as the longest total solar eclipse of the century will cast its shadow across parts of the globe.
The rare spectacle will last an astonishing 6 minutes and 22 seconds at its peak, plunging daytime into temporary darkness. The phenomenon will occur when the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, perfectly covering the sun.
The path of totality will sweep through 11 countries, including nine in the Arab world—Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia—along with Gibraltar and southern Spain. The moon’s shadow will create a dark corridor roughly 258 kilometers wide, covering over 2.5 million square kilometers.
When to Watch
The eclipse will begin as a partial eclipse around 7:30 am local time, with the total eclipse following shortly after.
This rare alignment of the sun, moon, and Earth will create a once-in-a-lifetime experience, unmatched in duration for the rest of the century. While some regions of Europe, Africa, and Asia will witness partial phases, the event will not be visible in North America, most of Asia, or Australia.
Astronomers and enthusiasts alike are already preparing for the moment when the sky briefly turns to night, offering a view that will not return for generations.told the media.
