The United Nations Human Rights Office (UNHR) issued a statement on Wednesday in response to a recent proposal by U.S. President Donald Trump for the United States to assume control over Gaza. The UNHR emphasized that any forcible transfer or deportation of people from occupied territories is prohibited under international law.
"It is crucial that we move towards the next phase of the ceasefire, to release all hostages and arbitrarily detained prisoners, end the war, and reconstruct Gaza, with full respect for international humanitarian law and international human rights law," the statement read.
The UNHR further reiterated its position that the forcible transfer of individuals from occupied territories is strictly forbidden by international conventions. The statement also called for the international community to uphold Gaza's rights and ensure that any resolution respects the region's sovereignty.
In response to President Trump’s proposal, Germany's government reaffirmed that Gaza "belongs to the Palestinians," reiterating its stance on the sovereignty of the Palestinian people over their territory.
The international community continues to debate the path forward for Gaza amid ongoing tensions, with calls for peace, humanitarian aid, and respect for international law at the forefront of discussions.
