Maya Waked Shares Personal Playlist Reflecting Her Musical Roots and Global Influences
Lebanese-Canadian singer Maya Waked has revealed her personal music playlist, offering listeners a glimpse into the songs that shaped her artistic journey and identity.
The playlist brings together iconic Arabic classics and well-known international hits, reflecting the strong influence of both her Lebanese roots and her global musical exposure. Among the standout tracks are Kifak Inta by Fairouz, Hala Hala by Emirati star Hussain Al Jassmi, I’m Alive by Celine Dion, and I’m Still Standing by Elton John.
Speaking about her choices, Waked said music has always connected her heritage with her personal journey. She noted that while she listens to many genres and follows new releases, her playlist remains deeply influenced by Fairouz and composer Ziad Rahbani, whose work played a key role in shaping her sound and identity.
At the top of her list is Kifak Inta, composed by Rahbani and performed by Fairouz. The song marked a major shift in Fairouz’s career, introducing a more modern style and language that resonated strongly with younger generations. Waked described the track as a powerful example of artistic courage and innovation.
Her playlist also includes Mich Ossa Hai, which reflects a more mature and reflective side of Fairouz, as well as Ya Dara Douri Fina, a song with deep personal meaning linked to memories of her late father. Another favorite is Nassam Alayna El Hawa, which Waked says captures a universal sense of nostalgia and longing for home, especially while living abroad.
Songs by the Rahbani Brothers, such as Hkili Hkili, also feature prominently. Waked believes their music stands out for being deeply patriotic while still resonating with audiences beyond Lebanon. She also highlighted Bizakker Bil Kharif, the Arabic adaptation of Autumn Leaves, arranged by Ziad Rahbani, praising its emotional depth and musical brilliance.
In addition to Lebanese classics, Waked’s playlist includes Khaleeji music, particularly Hala Hala by Hussain Al Jassmi, which she associates with warmth and belonging in the UAE. On the international side, songs like I’m Alive, I’m Still Standing, and Flowers by Miley Cyrus reflect themes of resilience, optimism, and empowerment.
Maya Waked is known for blending Lebanese musical traditions with modern styles, including jazz and Bossa Nova influences. She began her career as a backing vocalist for Fairouz and later worked closely with Ziad Rahbani, building a strong reputation for her distinctive and experimental sound.
Her performances, held at venues such as Place des Arts in Montreal and Alexanderplatz in Rome, are known for their emotional depth and storytelling. Most recently, she performed at Zabeel Theatre in Dubai, presenting a concert that celebrated cultural diversity through a mix of timeless classics and original compositions.
Born in Beirut into a family devoted to Fairouz and Rahbani operettas, Waked grew up surrounded by music, which became a source of comfort and expression during difficult times. Today, her playlist stands as a reflection of that journey—rooted in heritage, shaped by experience, and open to the world.
