WhatsApp goes down during New Year’s Eve

Thousands of users all over the world were not able to connect on the messaging app WhatsApp on both Android and iOS today.

The service went down only to restore 45 minutes later- and crash again minutes later.

According to the live outage map displayed on downdetector.co.uk, the messaging app appeared to be unable in Europe, North America, parts of Middle East countries, India, Australia and far east Asian countries.

According to a report from Daily Mail, while attempting to use the WhatsApp Web service generated an error message that said: 'WhatsApp Web requires a working internet connection, which you don't have at the moment.'

The problem appeared to be of the app unable connect to the internet, even if the user had a working mobile or Wi-Fi connection.

Elsewhere, some users could receive new messages - albeit with a delay - but couldn't reply.

A spokesman told Daily Mail,  'Some people have had trouble accessing WhatsApp for a short period today.

'We're working to restore service back to 100% for everyone and we apologize for the inconvenience.'

A leaked screenshot reportedly revealed that the messaging app is testing a video call function to rival the likes of Apple's FaceTime and Microsoft's Skype, where the blurry image shows a side-by-side shot of a video call being received and answered.
