Sir Garfield “Garry” Sobers, regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, has died at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy few in the sport can match.

The West Indies icon excelled as a batsman, bowler and fielder during a remarkable career spanning two decades. He played 93 Tests, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and claiming 235 wickets, while also taking 109 catches. Australian great Sir Donald Bradman once described Sobers as “the greatest cricketer of all time”.

Born in Barbados in 1936, Sobers made his Test debut at just 17 before rewriting cricket history with an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958, then the highest individual Test score. He later captained the West Indies to their first Test series victory over Australia and, in 1968, became the first player to hit six sixes in a single over in first-class cricket.
