FIFA will introduce mandatory hydration breaks in every match at the 2026 World Cup as officials prepare for high temperatures across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

All 104 matches in the expanded tournament will include two scheduled drink breaks in each half, regardless of weather conditions, as part of efforts to protect players from heat stress.

Each break is expected around the 22nd minute of each half and will last about three minutes, though timing may vary depending on match flow and stoppages.

The move follows forecasts of extreme conditions in several host cities, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C and humidity expected to make conditions feel even hotter.

Teams are already adapting, with some national sides planning early arrivals in host countries to help players acclimatise.

Beyond player welfare, the breaks could affect match strategy, allowing coaches to communicate directly with players during stoppages. However, FIFA has not yet clarified whether staff will be allowed to use electronic devices on the touchline.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions, with some coaches warning it could disrupt match rhythm and momentum, while others say it is necessary given the expected conditions at the first 48-team World Cup.
