Tottenham Hotspur boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a 2-1 win away at Aston Villa at Villa Park yesterday, moving out of the relegation zone in a crucial result at the business end of the season.
Spurs opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a long throw-in from the right was only partially cleared by Youri Tielemans. The ball dropped to Conor Gallagher on the edge of the area, and he took one touch before rifling a low strike into the bottom corner.
They doubled their advantage in the 25th minute when Richarlison rose highest above his marker to power a header into the net, meeting Mathys Tel’s cross from the left.
Aston Villa, who made several changes ahead of their European commitments, struggled to build momentum for much of the match. They pulled one back in stoppage time through Emi Buendía, who met Matty Cash’s cross at the near post and guided a header into the top-left corner, but it came too late to spark a comeback.
The result sees Tottenham climb to 17th place, one point above West Ham with three matches remaining, giving Roberto De Zerbi’s side renewed hope in their fight for Premier League survival.
For Villa, the defeat extends a difficult run of form as they remain fifth in the table and head into their Europa League semi-final second leg on the back of three straight losses in all competitions.
