20 Years in Dubai: McIlroy Eyes Historic Fifth Desert Classic Win
Rory McIlroy is aiming for his fifth victory at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic as he kicks off the 2026 DP World Tour season.
The World Number Two enjoyed a historic 2025, completing the career Grand Slam with his Masters win in April. He also claimed his second Amgen Irish Open title in September and helped Team Europe retain the Ryder Cup in New York. McIlroy capped the year by winning the Harry Vardon Trophy for the seventh time, confirming his status as Europe’s top golfer.
Despite a remarkable season, the 36-year-old says he remains focused and motivated for every tournament, including this week at Emirates Golf Club. “I need to show up at tournaments with enthusiasm every single time,” he said. “If I focus on the right things, the results will take care of themselves.”
McIlroy has a strong connection with the Middle East, finishing third at last week’s Dubai Invitational. Over his career in the UAE, he has recorded seven wins, eight runner-up finishes, and 37 top-ten results.
This week also marks 20 years since McIlroy first played at Emirates Golf Club as a 16-year-old amateur. “Dubai holds so many great memories for me,” he said. “It’s always felt like the perfect place to start the year.”
Meanwhile, defending champion Tyrrell Hatton described returning to the tournament as “surreal.” The 34-year-old won last year by one shot over Daniel Hillier and considers the Dubai Desert Classic a key event in his calendar. A victory this week would make him the most successful Rolex Series player, tied with Jon Rahm at five wins.
Both McIlroy and Hatton are set to bring excitement to this year’s event as the 2026 season gets underway.
