Inter Miami and Lionel Messi have reached an agreement to extend the Argentine superstar’s contract, ensuring his stay in Major League Soccer (MLS) beyond next year’s FIFA World Cup, a source close to the club has confirmed.
The new deal would keep the 38-year-old forward in competitive action through and after the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament kicks off on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Messi’s current contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season. According to the source, an official announcement is expected within two weeks. The extension could pave the way for Messi to conclude his illustrious career in the United States.
The World Cup winner joined Inter Miami in 2023 after a brief and challenging spell at Paris Saint-Germain, following nearly two decades at Barcelona. With the Catalan giants, Messi won 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies, establishing himself as one of the greatest players in football history.
On the international stage, Messi inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022 and has since lifted two Copa America titles, in 2021 and 2024. He has scored 114 goals for his country and is eyeing the possibility of competing in a record sixth World Cup. His long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo may also equal that achievement if he remains active.
If confirmed, the deal not only secures Messi’s presence in MLS but also signals the continuation of his legendary career on the global stage.
