Representatives from the Shura Council and the House of Representatives held a meeting yesterday in the Joint Legislative Committee on restructuring government subsidies.

The meeting was chaired by MP Abdulnabi Salman Ahmed, First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Jamal Fakhro, First Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council.

During the meeting, the government’s responses to the committee’s questions and inquiries were discussed. The committee members reached a preliminary consensus on three key allowances, while the committee continued its work to reach agreements on the remaining allowances.

An initial agreement was also reached to establish a timeline for the completion of the committee’s work. The six allowances being negotiated between the legislative and executive authorities are: allowances for people with disabilities, social security, cost of living improvement for retirees, cost of living allowance, housing allowance, and support for food commodities (meat and flour).

The committee emphasised its full commitment to reaching agreements with the government on comprehensive and integrated systems that ensure enhancing the living stability of Bahraini families, guaranteeing optimal utilisation and sustainability of financial resources, and directing support to the most deserving categories.

The committee also highlighted the continuation of consultative and coordinative meetings between representatives of the Shura Council and the House of Representatives in the Joint Committee, as well as with the government, to exchange information, inquiries, and perspectives on all matters related to the committee’s mandates and tasks.
