A student’s experience in US unfolds in movie
The US Embassy in Manama has hosted a movie night alongside enthusiastic Bahraini university student Deena Al Saweer to showcase her experience in the US.
Deena Al Saweer is a university student from Bahrain Polytechnic who was selected for the NESA UGRAD (Near East, South Asia Undergraduate Exchange Programme) one-year university study in America.
She got the chance to study in Wayne State University for one year in Michigan. It was during this time that she took her interest in photography to a completely different level and decided to professionally take videos of her whole experience in the US.
A movie she produced under her production called Deena Productions was screened on the night. The movie was a montage of the time period and stages she spent in the country involving places like Detroit, Chicago and Los Angeles.
Deena Al Saweer described her experience: “It was an eye-opener to say the least. Being able to live in a different country is one thing, studying there is another because of the different education systems, and this programme specifically had an extra spice added: community service. One of the things you had to do during your stay in America is community service and by doing that I learned so much about their community as well and I began to appreciate mine back home even more.”
“I definitely advise people to try these exchange programmes out because the embassy is very supportive. I especially advise you to enrol in one of the programmes if you are quiet, shy, or inexperienced in life. If it’s anything that will expose you to important life lessons, it’s living on your own for a semester, year, or even a month.”
After the screening of the movie was over, exchange students from America including Bahraini exchange students, who recently came from their trip in the US lined up in the speakers panel list to entertain any Bahraini students who were interested in joining their programmes.
Among the programmes the speakers participated was the YES programme, the NESA UGRAD programme and the Fullbright programme.
Many of the Fullbright students from America are teaching in universities like the University of Bahrain, Ahlia University and Arabian Gulf University. All speakers talked about their experience in both countries including the culture shocks they’ve experienced and stereotypes people perceived of them.
