A huge dust storm swirling over Bahrain gave the cleaning crews non-stop extra work yesterday as they had to toil all over the day to remove thick films of dirt, fallen trees and advertisement hoardings from public streets and squares. There were no reports of injuries or damages.

A top works ministry official said they removed more than 150 truckloads of dust and sand from streets and squares following the dust storm, which also degraded air quality across several areas of Bahrain.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, said the Capital Municipality and the three municipalities are sweeping streets and removing the remnants of the dust wave that swept Bahrain, yesterday.

Cleaning work, he said, will continue until streets are wiped clean. He pointed out that the Capital Municipality removed 25 truckloads of dust, Muharraq Municipality 55 shipments, Southern Municipality 45 shipments, and the Northern Municipality removed 35 shipments. “We also removed ten truckloads of fallen trees, shrubs, and 18 advertisements boards,” he added.

The municipality, the top official said, formed cleaning teams in all governorates as directed by the Essam Khalaf, the Minister of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning. “Street sweeping works are continuing round the clock to ensure the safety of road users,” he added.
