April 2022 was warmer than normal in Bahrain

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications’ Meteorological Directorate reported in their monthly weather summary that the month of April 2022 was warmer than normal in temperatures with below average precipitation and wind speed.             

The mean temperature of the month was 27.3°C which is 1.3°C above the long-term normal for April and this goes on record as the fourth highest mean temperature for April since 1902. Note that the highest mean monthly temperature for April was 27.7°C recorded in 2021.

The mean maximum temperature of the month was 31.9°C which is 1.3°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the fifth highest mean maximum temperature for April since 1946. Note that the highest mean monthly maximum temperature for April was 33.3°C recorded in 2021.

The highest temperature recorded during the month was 38.1°C which occurred on the 7th April at Bahrain International Airport (BIA) but recorded 39.7°C on the 13th April at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC).

The mean minimum temperature of the month was 23.4°C which is 1.0°C above the long-term normal and this goes on record as the fifth highest mean minimum temperature for April since 1946. Note that the highest mean monthly minimum temperature for April was 24.1°C recorded in 2010 and 2017.

The lowest temperature recorded was 20.3°C on the 1st April at BIA but recorded 16.5°C on the same night at Durrat Al Bahrain.

The mean relative humidity for April was 45% whereas the mean maximum relative humidity was 66% and the mean minimum relative humidity was 24%. The maximum relative humidity was 80% recorded on the 30th April and the minimum relative humidity was 7% recorded on the 19th April. 

Only 0.1 mm of Precipitation was reported in April 2022 at BIA. Trace amounts were recorded on the 26th and 28th April.  Note that the long-term mean total precipitation for April is 5.8 mm and the highest monthly rainfall recorded during April at BIA was 69.9 mm which occurred in 1961.

The total precipitation for April 2022 at Durrat Al Bahrain was 0.8 mm, whereas the total precipitation at King Fahad Causeway and Sitra Island was 0.2 mm and no precipitation was recorded at BIC and University of Bahrain (UoB).

The total hours of sunshine for the month were 277.3 hours. Note that the highest monthly total hours of sunshine for April was 318.1 hours recorded in 2017.

The Mean wind speed for April was 8 knots. The prevailing wind was 35% from the Northwest direction. Gust winds reached 35 knots on the 29th April at BIA and Durrat Al Bahrain. The Easterly to Southeasterly winds accounted for 19% of the observation.

Dust was reported on the 25th April. Visibility dropped to 1200 meters at BIA.

April is considered to be a transitional season period from winter to summer which is usually associated with unsettled weather known locally as (Al-Sarrayat) which extends up to mid-May.
