Jail sentence reduced in fake wedding case

Two men convicted in connection with orchestrating a sham wedding to deceive a woman have had their jail terms reduced on appeal. The defendants include an apothecary and an ex-police captain, who were both sentenced to five years in jail each after being found guilty on grounds of fraud before the High Criminal Court. However the Appeals Court reduced their terms in prison to three years each.

According to the case, the apothecary, 41, reportedly interfered to help his friend, the ex-police captain, who developed a bad blood with his girlfriend after she discovered that he had married another woman despite having a relationship with her for six years.

“I had been with him for six years, but our relationship changed after I discovered that he had got married to another woman,” the 31-year-old victim told prosecutors earlier.

She claimed he had attacked her with a knife. So she filed a complaint at the police station.

“He contacted me and agreed to marry me,” she said, and added that he had begged her to drop the case against him as he was dismissed from his job.

However, the victim later discovered that she was cheated and that the clergyman, who conducted the fake marriage, was an apothecary.

“We went to an apartment to get married and he (the apothecary) pretended to be a religious cleric,” she revealed.

Meanwhile, the ex-police captain told prosecutors that she had filed a false complaint against him as she was upset that he took another wife.
