Duo’s jail sentence upheld in vehicles’ battery theft case

Manama

Two Bahraini thieves convicted in connection with stealing vehicles’ batteries have had their jail terms upheld. The duo reportedly robbed two vehicles’ batteries from a Tubli automobile repair store. They were caught on CCTV cameras installed at the property. The footage showed that they had also destroyed the wiring connections of both cars after removing the batteries.

Police had initially nabbed the brother of the defendant as the pick-up van, which they had used during the robbery, was registered under his name.

But it turned out later that it was the defendant (the brother of the owner), who was using it with his co-accomplice.

The first defendant, however, denied committing the crime intentionally, claiming that he had thought that they were scrapped vehicles.

“I was touring the area with my friend (the second defendant) and we saw the vehicles bonnets removed. We dismantled the batteries and we took them,” the first said in his statement.

The Bahrainis were earlier sentenced to one year in jail each, which was confirmed by the High Criminal Appeals Court.
