Tragic School Bus Crash in Colombia Kills 17, Injures 20
Bogotá: A devastating accident occurred in northern Colombia when a school bus carrying students from Antioqueño High School fell off a cliff, resulting in 17 fatalities and 20 injuries. The bus was traveling from Tolú to Medellín after a school trip when it crashed in the rural area of El Chispero, Antioquia, around 5:40 a.m. local time on Sunday, December 14.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but authorities suspect the driver may have experienced a "microsleep," a brief lapse in consciousness lasting around 30 seconds. The bus was carrying at least 37 passengers and rolled 80,000 meters down the cliff.
The school has clarified that the outing was not an official activity, but rather one organized by the 11th-grade students. Governor Andrés Julián expressed his condolences, stating it's "very hard news for the entire community during the time of December".
Emergency responders swiftly mobilized to transport the wounded to nearby hospitals, including San Vicente de Paúl Hospital in Remedios and a hospital in Segovia. The injured included four adults and 12 minors.
