Include sustainable development goals in IPU meetings, says Bahrain

New York

--

The First Vice Chairman of the Shura Council, Dr. Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, has suggested the permanent inclusion of the sustainable development goals as a topic in the agenda of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s meetings during the discussion session between parliamentarians at the UN headquarters on Wednesday.

The suggestion has been lauded by the head of discussion session and it will be submitted to the IPU for review. Dr. Jamal Fakhro said the proposal was presented during the discussions between parliamentarians as part of the workshop themed “Translating New Development Goals into Action.”

More than 130 heads of parliaments attended the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at UN Headquarters here from August 31 to September 2. The participants explored issues of peace, development and democracy.

The IPU’s meeting convenes once every five years as part of a series of high-level meetings whose outcomes contribute into the UN Summits’ post-2015 sustainable development agenda.
