Motorists indulging in illegal car race, stunts face action

Manama : Traffic Prosecution Deputy Chief Attorney Mohammed Al Dhahrani said yesterday that it has launched investigations into a footage that recently appeared on social media, showing a driver performing stunts on one of the busiest junctions in the Kingdom.

DT News reported on Sunday that traffic police arrested a driver, who was seen performing a tyre-smoking car drift at a junction linking Istiqlal Highway and Mahzoura Avenue on Friday while staying dangerously close to oncoming traffic.

Al Dhahrani clarified in a statement released on the official page of the Public Prosecution on Instagram that the driver had covered the vehicle’s number plates using a piece of cloth while he illegally performed the stunts.

“Investigations led to the vehicle, which was parked next to the suspect’s residence in the nearby area of Hijjiyat in Riffa. He was arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution. He confessed in the interrogation to the accusations against him. The prosecution ordered to detain the driver pending further investigation, in order to refer him to the concerned court as soon as possible,” Al Dhahrani added.

The incident comes in the wake of increased reckless driving, illegal street racing and car stunts amid authorities doubling their efforts to combat such acts.

The judicial authorities also announced yesterday the detention and trial of several motorists involved in such illegal activities that endanger road users in the Kingdom.

Motorcyclists arrested

Al Dhahrani also confirmed the arrest of two motorcyclists who were seen performing illegal stunts and disturbing traffic and public order in Juffair at the beginning of the month.

In the first case, investigations were launched after the footage, which was widely circulated online, was detected by the traffic police.

The motorcycles were impounded by the police after locating them being parked in Juffair. The drivers were summoned and they admitted that they illegally performed the stunt on March 9. After interrogation, the prosecution ordered to detain them and refer them to the concerned court.
