21% cast votes in BCCI polls

ManamaOver 7000 members cast their votes to elect the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) board members and chairman at the polling station set up at Isa Cultural Centre, yesterday.

This accounted for 21 per cent of the total 32,745 voters registered for voting.

The voting was held from 8:00 am in the morning till 10:00 pm. Counting of the votes began immediately after the polling.

An Elections Committee headed by Chairperson Jassim Abdul A’al supervised the elections.

Instructions were issued to the voters by the election committee which were published in all major newspapers including DT News ahead of the polls. A live broadcast of the voting process was available on BCCI YouTube page throughout the day.

A record number of voters turned up for the election which resulted in large queues at the polling station.

The voters voiced their displeasure over the long queues which caused a commotion until community police arrived to restore order. Many of them were first-time voters as a large number of members were added to BCCI membership this year.

“This is the first time my business has taken a BCCI membership and so I have decided to make use of it and vote,” said Naushad, a first-time voter in the BCCI elections.

“It was a huge crowd, which I was happy to see. I have been following the developments from the beginning so I wanted to be a part of this,” said May May Nu, a senior citizen from Myanmar, who has been following the high decibel election campaign of the prestigious business chamber of the Kingdom.
